RI Govt defines independence through uplifting people from poverty

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar stated that an important way to realize independence is by freeing people from hunger and poverty, which currently remain major challenges for Indonesia.

“The challenge ahead is how to fulfill independence by freeing the people from hunger,” he remarked at the National Prayer for Indonesia’s 80th Independence Anniversary at Proclamation Park here on Friday.

He remarked that President Prabowo Subianto had interpreted independence holistically through various strategic programs aimed at improving the quality of Indonesia’s human resources, including through the provision of Free Nutritious Meals (MBG).

“We often hear President Prabowo’s statement on various occasions that independence is holistic. It cannot be called total independence if there are still people going hungry, especially children, pregnant women, or women who have just given birth and who need healthy nutrition,” he explained.

The second strategic program to realize the meaning of independence is the People’s School program, which seeks to realize equal education for all people, especially the poor.

“We cannot enjoy freedom without getting sufficient education, especially if access to that education is hampered by costs,” he pointed out.

“The president is trying to translate this by providing education to our children without discrimination, and now this People’s School is underway,” the minister stated.

The third strategic program to lift people out of poverty is the Garuda School program, which provides international-level educational opportunities to young people with high intellectual abilities who face financial barriers.

The minister emphasized that independence must be interpreted collaboratively by all parties, especially considering Indonesia’s global reputation for religious diversity and pluralism.

“All religious groups exist in Indonesia. This signifies that we are a unified, solid, and unique nation. No other country is as pluralistic as Indonesia. Indonesia is a vast archipelago, with so many ethnicities and followers of diverse religions,” he stated.

“We also have different skin colors. Hence, it is very proud to imagine a country like Indonesia being able to maintain its independence,” the minister affirmed.
