Robert Griffin III expected to land at Fox Sports as network’s No. 2 college football analyst: Sources

After being fired by ESPN eight months ago, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III is expected to be hired by Fox Sports to be its No. 2 college football game analyst, sources briefed on the move told The Athletic on Thursday.

Griffin, 35, would replace Brock Huard as the network’s second-highest college football game analyst. Huard announced he was leaving the booth to be an assistant coach for his son’s high school football team. Griffin is expected to team with play-by-player Jason Benetti.

Fox Sports declined to comment.

The deal is anticipated to go through, but a contract has not yet been signed. When ESPN lets go of an employee under contract, it continues to pay the person, but does have the right to block them from other moves. The network let Griffin go in August of last year, on the eve of the football season.

In fewer than four years since he last played in the NFL, Griffin has had an up-and-down broadcasting career. In the summer of 2021, he aced game analyst auditions with both ESPN and Fox Sports. Both networks wanted to hire him. He chose ESPN, where he rose to the “Monday Night Football” pregame team and was also one of its lead college football game analysts.

Even while at ESPN, Fox showed interest in Griffin. When the network and Reggie Bush, one of its top analysts on its college pregame show “Big Noon Kickoff,” had a contract dispute in 2022, Fox considered hiring Griffin to replace him. Instead, after Bush did one more year on the program, the network eventually went with Mark Ingram II.

At the same time, Griffin fell out of favor at ESPN, which resulted in him being cut last summer. He appeared on Netflix’s Christmas Day NFL studio show.

With Fox Sports, the plan is to have Griffin on games. He could show up occasionally on studio shows, but he is not expected to be a big part of their talk show programs, as he was on ESPN’s “Get Up” and “First Take.”
