Royalties from Finnish music soar abroad in 2024

Royalties collected by Teosto from international sources saw significant growth in 2024. Payments from foreign copyright organisations to Finnish music creators increased by over 25% compared to the previous year. This rise is attributed to the growing global popularity of Finnish music and Teosto’s investments in international operations.

In total, Finnish music creators and publishers received €5.6 million in royalties from abroad in 2024.

These royalties are collected through reciprocal agreements that Teosto has in over 100 countries worldwide.

Key contributors to the increase include Germany, where royalties from classical music rose sharply, and the United States, which saw nearly a 30% surge. Finnish creators have been part of teams working with U.S. star artists, and revenues from streaming platforms in the U.S. have risen significantly. Royalties from Sweden also increased by a third.

In addition to the U.S., Asia is viewed as an emerging market. In Japan, new music featuring Finnish writers has gained traction. For audiovisual music, royalties grew particularly in France, where Finnish films and their soundtracks have received considerable attention.

“All of Finnish music’s key international markets experienced growth. Alongside traditional music uses, online royalties from streaming platforms have increased significantly. We work closely with our extensive global partner network to ensure royalties are collected efficiently,” said Helmi Yli-Äyhö, Head of International Affairs at Teosto.

The growth also reflects Teosto’s intensified efforts. The organisation has increased advisory services for clients regarding various national music markets. Improvements in data quality have expedited royalty collection, particularly for audiovisual works, where challenges had previously slowed processes.

Teosto has strengthened ties with international organisations and maintained active contact with globally operating music creators and publishers. Client events and improved communication have played a critical role in ensuring documentation and data accuracy.

“More music creators and publishers are working internationally, and our goal is to be the best possible copyright organisation partner for them. Our role is to guide and assist our clients while ensuring all necessary data is in place to collect the royalties they are owed efficiently,” said Maiju Ristilä, Member Manager for International Clients.

Teosto’s focus on international activities continues in 2025. The organisation recently introduced a new expedited royalty payment process and removed a small processing fee previously applied to international royalties.

“We have successfully enhanced our operations and improved creators’ and publishers’ trust in our international capabilities. This year, our development work will remain strongly guided by our clients’ needs,” Ristilä added.
