New Delhi: Big news has come out regarding a cancer vaccine. Russian scientists have developed a new vaccine to treat colon (large intestine) cancer. This vaccine has been completely successful in preclinical trials. Veronika Skvortsova, head of Russia’s Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA), gave this information during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF). She said that the vaccine is now ready for use and is awaiting official approval.
The vaccine is completely safe and highly effective
Skvortsova said that work was going on on this vaccine for many years. The last three years were spent in mandatory preclinical studies. These studies proved that the vaccine is completely safe, even if it is given repeatedly. Also, this vaccine has proven to be highly effective. This reduced the size of the tumour by 60% to 80% and slowed down the progression of cancer. Apart from this, the life expectancy of patients was also improved. Studies have also indicated an increase in the survival rate due to the vaccine.
Focus on colorectal cancer
The first use of this vaccine will be in the treatment of colorectal cancer. Apart from this, scientists are also working on vaccines for glioblastoma (a dangerous brain cancer) and certain types of melanomas, such as melanoma of the eye. These projects are in the advanced stage and can prove to be a great success in the future.
How does a cancer vaccine work?
Most people know vaccines to prevent infectious diseases like measles or chickenpox. These vaccines prepare the body’s immunity to recognise and destroy viruses or bacteria. But cancer vaccines work differently. It helps the body’s immune system to recognise and destroy cancer cells. Some vaccines treat cancer, while some are for its prevention.

According to the American Cancer Society, currently, some vaccines are available for prostate and bladder cancer. But this Russian vaccine for colon cancer is a major achievement. This announcement was made during the 10th Eastern Economic Forum held in the Russian city of Vladivostok. The theme of this forum was: ‘The Far East: Cooperation for Peace and Prosperity’.
A ray of hope
Colon cancer is one of the fastest-growing cancers globally. Its cases are also increasing continuously in India. If this vaccine gets official approval and is widely available, it can save millions of lives.
What is, and why does colon cancer occur?
Colon cancer, also known as large intestine cancer, is cancer in the lower part of the digestive system, i.e. the large intestine or rectum. It develops slowly and its symptoms are often not obvious in the early stages. If it is not detected in time, it can spread to other parts of the body. Colon cancer begins when the cells of the large intestine start growing abnormally.
