Russia’s participation in BRICS makes it important player in international trade — expert – Business & Economy
BANGKOK, February 27. /TASS/. Russia’s growing trade and economic cooperation with the BRICS countries speaks of its strength, which is a key factor in the system of international trade, Meechai Thaocharean, Thailand’s representative to the International Alliance for Strategic Projects BRICS (IASP BRICS), told a TASS correspondent.
“Russia’s robust economic fundamentals, vast natural resources, and strategic position in global trade continue to demonstrate its long-term economic resilience. While the current global dynamics between Russia, the US, and Europe are evolving, Russia’s growing trade relationships within BRICS and its expanding economic partnerships showcase its strength as a key driver of international commerce. The strengthening of US-Russia dialogue could potentially create new opportunities for European economic engagement as well. Thailand views both European and American markets as important trade partners alongside Russia and other BRICS nations,” he said.
Thaocharean pointed to the importance of “facilitating student exchange programs with Russia and other BRICS nations.” “We firmly believe that quality education shapes correct attitudes between nations. We value knowledge exchange and expertise sharing among BRICS countries, creating relationships that strengthen economic and social partnerships. While focusing on contemporary sciences, we prioritize cultural exchange within the BRICS community. We are particularly committed to facilitating student exchange programs with Russia and other BRICS nations, and stand ready to coordinate with any organizations interested in establishing these valuable educational connections. These initiatives build lasting relationships between our future generations, creating foundations for meaningful long-term partnerships across various sectors,” the expert added.
Brazil took over the rotating BRICS chairmanship on January 1, 2025. Russia held the BRICS chairmanship in 2024. The key event during its chairmanship was the Kazan Summit on October 22-24, where it was decided to create a category of BRICS partner countries. The first countries to become partners were Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Indonesia was also initially named as a BRICS partner, but on January 6, Brazil announced that the country had been granted full member status.
