Saints sports week: CSS baseball settles for split – Duluth News Tribune

St. Scholastica came painfully close to a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball on Sunday afternoon before dropping the second game to the Auggies 9-8 in 11 innings.

CSS had already won the first game 1-0 on a seven-inning combined shutout from pitchers Zach Hlinsky and Jake Schelonka and was ahead 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth of the nine-inning second game. The hosts cut the deficit in half in an eighth inning in which three Augsburg batters were hit by pitches.

CSS still held an 8-5 lead in the ninth and got the first two outs before two singles, an error and a double tied the game. The Saints came up empty with the bases loaded and one out in the 10th before Augsburg won the game in the bottom of the 11th on a walkoff single.

Four Saints had two hits apiece in game two, with three Saints driving in two runs apiece.

In game one, Finley Spicer’s first-inning sacrifice fly was all the offense CSS needed. Kyle Oswald was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Hlinsky allowed three hits in five shutout innings, while Schelonka worked two clean innings for a save.

On Thursday, the Saints dropped an 11-5 decision at 18th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus. Spicer was 3-for-4 with a single and a double, while Schelonka was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. The second scheduled game of the doubleheader was 4-4 after nine innings but was suspended due to darkness and will be resumed at an unspecified later date.

The Saints (8-8, 2-2 MIAC) are scheduled to return to Wade Stadium on Wednesday afternoon for a MIAC doubleheader vs. St. Olaf.

Saints shut out at Saint Mary’s

A total of 12 innings of softball in Winona failed to yield a run for St. Scholastica, which lost 6-0 and 11-0 in their first taste MIAC play for the season on Saturday.

The Saints were shut out in game one on four hits, two of them by Lauren Laviano.

In game two, CSS had four more hits, two from Emma Bolin, but were held off the scoreboard.

CSS (4-14, 0-2 MIAC) was scheduled for a league doubleheader at Augsburg on Tuesday before a home opener Wednesday vs. St. Catherine at Kenwood Field in Duluth.

Saints sweep Saint Mary’s

Jonas Abeleda claimed points at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles (alongside teammate Eamon Gerrard-Stace) as St. Scholastica swept a MIAC men’s tennis dual 9-0 from Saint Mary’s on Saturday at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center.

The CSS duo won the doubles match 8-5, while Abeleda took his singles match 6-3, 6-0. Gerrard-Stace also won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Dane Patten had a similar success at No. 2 singles and doubles, having dropped only one game of the two matches combined when his singles opponent retired due to injury.

The CSS women won their dual 6-3 over the Cardinals. Katia Bartels, Mishell Benitez and Maria Sosa all were part of two points apiece in the win.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
