Sally Hawkins Names The Real Reason She Quit The Paddington Films

At the time, Sally said in a statement that it “felt the right time to hand the reins over to another” actor, pointing out that “one can’t get much better than” Emily Mortimer, her replacement as Mrs Brown, who she described as “truly wonderful” and “extraordinarily special”.

However, in a new interview with The Times, Sally admitted there was one other deciding factor in her decision not to continue playing the character.

Sally revealed that while she felt “so awful” not to join her former co-stars in Paddington In Peru, she is such a fan of director Paul King – who helmed the first two movies but chose not to direct the third – it “would’ve broken my heart” to do the film without him.

Indeed, Sally went on to reunite with the filmmaker in his movie musical Wonka, playing the title character’s mum, released the year before Paddington In Peru.

As well as Emily Mortimer, the film saw the return of Hugh Bonneville, Dame Julie Walters and Ben Whishaw, reprising his role as the voice of Paddington, alongside new additions like Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas and Hayley Atwell.
