Sammy Hagar Reflects on Music and Friendship Ahead of Stagecoach Festival

INDIO, California — Sammy Hagar, a prominent figure in rock music for over 50 years, is set to perform at this weekend’s Stagecoach festival. Hagar, 77, is known for his time with Montrose and Van Halen, as well as his Cabo Wabo brand.

In a recent interview, Hagar shared that he feels a stronger connection to country music artists than many rock stars. He called country music ‘about songs and stories’ and said it aligns with his values of honesty and authenticity.

At the Stagecoach festival, Hagar will share the stage with renowned talent, including Luke Combs and Brothers Osborne, as well as non-country acts like Creed and T-Pain. Following the festival, he plans to launch a residency at the Park MGM casino in Las Vegas with his band, featuring guitarist Joe Satriani and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony.

Hagar recently took to Zoom from his Mill Valley home to discuss the origins of several of his famous songs, including a poignant new track dedicated to Eddie Van Halen, who passed away in 2020. This song reflects on their long friendship and musical partnership.

Looking back at his career, Hagar detailed the story behind his hit ‘I Can’t Drive 55,’ which he wrote after being pulled over for speeding during a tiring journey home. ‘It resonated with so many drivers because it felt real,’ he noted.

As Hagar reflects on his legacy, he remains excited about upcoming projects and cherishes his memories with Van Halen, underscoring the impact of mutual respect and connection in music.
