Saudi Arabia Launches Humanitarian Airlift to Syria

Saudi Arabia has initiated a humanitarian airlift to Syria, delivering essential medical, food, and shelter supplies to alleviate the dire conditions facing Syrians, according to official reports.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) announced on Wednesday that the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) dispatched the first flights of the Saudi airlift from King Khalid International Airport.

The aircraft carried food, shelter, and medical supplies to Damascus International Airport, aiming to “ease the difficult circumstances currently experienced by the Syrian people.”

Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the General Supervisor of KSRelief, confirmed that the airlift would be followed by a land convoy in the coming days to provide urgent assistance.

The aid comes as Syria grapples with the aftermath of over a decade of conflict that has devastated its infrastructure. The country’s healthcare system remains in disarray, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting last week that nearly half of Syria’s hospitals are out of service.

A high-ranking Saudi government delegation recently visited Damascus and met with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the leader of the newly formed Syrian administration.

Al-Sharaa described Syria as a “disaster-stricken nation,” highlighting the long-term impact of war on its infrastructure and public services.

This humanitarian initiative follows Saudi Arabia’s earlier assistance to Syria after a devastating earthquake struck its northern regions in February 2023, during the presidency of Bashar Al-Assad.
