SBP holds hockey and boxing trials
LAHORE – Sports Board Punjab (SBP) organized trials for women’s hockey and both men’s and women’s boxing on Thursday as part of preparations for the upcoming 35th National Games, set to be held in Karachi from May 1 to 9. The hockey trials took place at the National Hockey Stadium, while boxing hopefuls showcased their skills at the Body Contact Sports Centre. DG Sports Punjab Khizar Afzaal Ch personally observed the trials, which saw participation from over 60 female hockey players representing various divisions and 35 boxers, both male and female. Also present at the venues were Director Admin Dr. M Kaleem, Director Sports Rana Nadeem Anjum, and other SBP officials. The DG emphasised the transparency of the selection process, saying that all trials are being held purely on merit. “Only the most talented and deserving athletes are being selected to represent Punjab in the National Games,” he asserted. He also praised the emergence of promising new talent, particularly in women’s hockey.
Meanwhile, SBP’s qualified coaches continued intensive training sessions across multiple venues within the Nishtar Park Sports Complex. Athletes from judo, karate, wushu, and table tennis attended focused camps where they were taught modern techniques, tactical skills, and underwent twice-daily fitness and conditioning exercises.
Female athletes from judo, karate, and wushu also took part in exhibition matches, aimed at enhancing their match stamina and competitive readiness. Khizar Afzaal also inspected these training camps, observed the coaching methods closely, and interacted with players to assess their satisfaction with the ongoing preparations and facilities.
