Schlarman Academy North Science Fair Brings Out Student Creativity

It’s February, and that means Science Fair time at Schlarman Academy’s North Campus.  During Friday (Feb 21st) afternoon’s judging period, 8th grader Cooper Sims had a big crowd around his project.  The idea was to find out which vehicle is the most aerodynamic.  Sims told us he started with some model cars, and a couple of incense cones inside cups; and he was on his way.

AUDIO: And then I lit them with the lighter to get very smoky.  And then I’m letting it sit for a little bit so they can really get lit.  And then I’ll use a fan on the other end of the wind tunnel to suck all the smoke out.  And then you can see how the air’s moving around the car.

When 8th grader Bailey Perez saw something about lemons giving off light, she knew she’d found her project.

AUDIO: I saw it online; and it worked, so I just decided to do it.  And then I took these alligator clips, and I connected them.  And I put the lemons in copper and zinc formation, like copper to zinc form.  But the citric acid makes, like, power.

While Schlarman Academy North Science teachers Karla Andrew, Kristopher Andrew, and Rena McMahon took pride in their students’ work; Jen O’Brien of the Schlarman Academy Advancement team told us the Science Fair always brings out the students’ best.

AUDIO: Kids are excited to see everybody’s creations; and they spend a lot of time working on them.  So, it’s just great to get everybody together.

And Business Manager Ashley Drake told us that the winners moving on to state will be displaying their projects again in early May.
