Science center in Tuaran cancelled
Madius
KOTA KINABALU (Mar 7): The proposed establishment of the Sabah branch of the National Science Centre (PSNCS) in Kampung Laya-Laya, Tuaran, will not proceed due to several key factors.
According to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), the primary reasons for the project’s cancellation include the location’s lack of strategic suitability.
“Additionally, the low population density and inadequate basic infrastructure pose significant challenges to the project’s implementation.
“The high cost of infrastructure construction is also a concern, as road access to the site has yet to be developed,” the ministry stated in a written reply to a non-verbal question from Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau (UPKO – Tuaran) during a parliamentary session.
In his inquiry, Madius sought clarification from MOSTI regarding the status of the PSN construction, which was proposed for Kampung Laya-Laya, Tuaran, in 2016.
He also asked whether the project had been canceled and, if so, the reasons behind the cancellation and the new proposed location.
MOSTI confirmed that with the assistance of the Sabah government, efforts are underway to identify a more suitable alternative location for the PSNCS.
“The new location must consider factors such as local population density, availability of public facilities, accessibility for the people of Sabah, and the government’s financial capacity to fund the development.
“To fulfill the goal of making science and technology more accessible to the people of Sabah, the establishment of PSNCS is expected to be proposed for implementation during the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMKe-13),” the ministry added.
For the record, the PSNCS was initially proposed to expand public access to Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) initiatives and to support the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education ecosystem in Malaysia.
