Science Isn’t a Luxury for Developing Countries by Bridget Boakye

From the COVID-19 pandemic to intensifying climate shocks, a series of crises has exposed the risks of depending on wealthy countries to deliver scientific and technological solutions. If developing economies are to respond effectively to crises and take control of their development, they must build their own research ecosystems.

NEW YORK – Parallel to this month’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, another critical summit will take place: the Science Summit at UNGA80. The Summit – which aims to highlight “the pivotal role of science in addressing societal challenges” – will provide a platform for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to demand a renewed recognition of scientific research as a pillar of resilience and sovereignty.
