The Science Mill has a STEMFest on its back-to-school lesson plan. The Johnson City museum hosts a full day of activities based in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The day isn’t just for kids.
“This is the perfect way to kick off the new school year by treating our incredible educators,” said Science Mill Senior Education Specialist Aileen Torres in a media release from the museum. “We’ve packed the day with hands-on STEAM activities, all designed to spark new ideas that teachers can easily bring back to their classrooms. Plus, with our dedicated Teacher’s Lounge and giveaways, it’s our way of saying thank you to these hardworking professionals before they dive back into the school year, and that we are always here to support their efforts.”
STEMFest activities include:
- Rainbow Chemistry—Test household solutions to see how the pH of each affects the color it produces. It’s a simple way to learn about acids, bases, and the science behind chemical reactions.
- Roll Call…Ozobots!—Program an Ozobot path and watch it follow the design.
- Classroom Catapults—Build your own catapult using everyday items such as popsicle sticks and rubber bands, plus a little creativity.
- Careers in Cardboard—Design and build a project inspired by STEM careers using only cardboard.
- Shape Shifters—Dive into the world of tangrams by cutting, coloring, and personalizing your own puzzle pieces, a mix of art and problem-solving.
- Special guest—Award-winning author Kathleen J. Shields will present some of her STEM-themed, educational children’s books.
- Teacher’s Lounge—Educators can enjoy refreshments, swag, and extra appreciation before the new school year begins.
The Science Mill is located at 101 S. Lady Bird Lane in Johnson City. All activities are included with general admission. Tickets can be purchased in advance at sciencemill.org. The museum’s regular exhibits and gift shop will be open. The on-site Lady Bird Lane Cafe is open Wednesday-Saturday from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
