Scientists Explore the Antarctic Ice Sheet
March 16, 2025March 16, 2025
Chinese scientists have successfully conducted an experiment to explore the Antarctic ice sheet using a hyperspectral and broadband microwave radiometer, according to the team of the 41st Chinese Antarctic Expedition.
The team conducted experiments combining aerial and ground-based observations using helicopters and icebreakers, successfully detecting the temperature distribution under the ice in Antarctica using remote sensing.
Zhou Di, a researcher at the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, explained that the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet often begins at its base. However, traditional methods for detecting temperatures under the ice are expensive and difficult to implement.
He pointed out that this innovative device detects the energy of weak microwave radiation emitted from inside the ice sheet, allowing it to map the temperature distribution from the surface of the ice to its base, at depths of up to 4 meters.
He added that this technology can provide essential data support for research on the melting of polar ice caps, the evolution of subglacial lakes and hydrological systems, as well as sea level changes.
