Scientists point to need for self-ruling research authority
[InTime News]
Scientists in Greece and abroad are calling for the creation of a new national research organization, or the transformation of existing institutions like the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation into an independent authority. In an open letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Development Ministry, more than 260 signatories liken the proposed body to ASEP, the Supreme Council for Civil Personnel Selection, saying it should act as “an ASEP for research” to ensure transparent and merit-based evaluation.
The appeal comes after disputes over last year’s “Trust Your Stars” program and high-profile resignations from the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation, whose members criticized weak strategy, low funding, and bureaucracy.
“The investment in science is not a luxury; it is the only sustainable path for Greece in the 21st century,” the letter states. Konstantinos Drosatos, pharmacology professor at the University of Cincinnati, added the independent body would guarantee continuity, meritocracy and transparency regardless of ministerial changes.
