Scientists Predict Imminent Eruption of Mount Spurr In Alaska – [your]NEWS
by Leslie D. Soule
Mount Spurr, a volcano located approximately 80 miles from Anchorage, Alaska, has scientists alarmed as an eruption is expected within “weeks to months”. The inhabited location closest to Mount Spurr is the village of Tyonek, which is 40 miles away. As of 2020, the population was 152, there.
Anchorage residents have been encouraged to stock up on essential supplies such as food/groceries, batteries, protective gear, pet food, and water. Scientists have noted uplift, geothermal vent changes, gas emissions, and a higher number of earthquakes related to the volcano. Carbon dioxide levels are noted as the most compelling piece of evidence, as values in the high range currently detected, have generally only occurred prior to a volcanic eruption.
Eagle River resident Cloe Turner states that, “We might not be able to work, and stores might not open. The last time something like this happened, the city was blanketed in ash for an entire month.”
USGS has noted hundreds of small tremors within a 30-mile radius of the volcano, since the beginning of this month. Officials have advised residents to keep their pets inside as much as possible, have a two-week supply of food and medications on-hand, and if/when ash falls, to brush it out of their pets’ fur. Many residents have bought protective goggles for themselves and their dogs. Some residents are buying respirators for their dogs as well.
Mount Spurr last erupted in 1992, and during that event, the ash cloud produced, disrupted air travel and covered parts of Anchorage. Predictions suggest that this imminent eruption could be larger, and may send plumes of volcanic ash 50,000 feet into the air.
As of March 19th, Mount Spurr was coded yellow, which is “advisory” status. The next levels up are “watch”/Orange and “warning”/Red. The change in status level is the best indicator, presently, of the likelihood of an eruption.
