Scottish Bagpiper Travels Through Mumbai Local Train, Shares Video Of Performing Inside Crowded Coach
Mumbai’s local trains recently witnessed a Scottish bagpiper playing traditional tunes in the middle of a packed coach. People might have created dance and prank reels onboard, but tuning into this musical instrument is something new and unique a Mumbaikar could witness.
Scottish musician Robin Alderslowe was in Mumbai this January and he travelled in the city’s lifeline transport for a beautiful experience. He delighted passengers with his bagpipe during his journey.
He posted a couple of videos online featuring his performance inside the trains.
Bagpiper enters crowded Mumbai Local
The first video showed Robin, dressed in full traditional Scottish attire—a green blazer, kilt, and plaid sash—trying to board a jam-packed second-class compartment. Just like the locals, he pushed and squeezed his way into the train, managing to enter the tightly packed coach.

Once inside, he did what he did best—he pulled out his instrument and turned the compartment into his stage.
In the second video, Robin stood in the middle of the compartment, filling the air with the sounds of his bagpipe. Some passengers looked on curiously trying to understand and enjoy the music, while others began recording reels and clapping along.
In the third video, Robin finally got a seat—likely a gesture of appreciation from fellow commuters who wanted him to play more comfortably. He continued his performance, captivating the audience in the crowded compartment.
The Scottish bagpiper later reflected on his unique experience in Mumbai, India.
Not a common sight
“Bagpiper perform on a train in Mumbai recently, not a common sight. We loved India for its open nature, where we felt we had the freedom to perform anywhere. Everybody there was very supportive and often enthusiastic. Mumbai itself was a perfect environment for being a musician trying to find a captivated audience”, Robin wrote.
“Playing on a train was definitely not something I would have ever expected to get away with in South Korea, China or most of my other destinations for that matter”, he added.
Man spotted closing his ears as Robin performed
One of the most relatable moments from his videos featured a fellow commuter covering his ears while Robin played. The man, possibly exhausted from a long day, initially seemed annoyed by the loud sound produced by the instrument. However, seconds later, he joined the bagpiper by softly clapping and cheering the performance.
“He was clapping at the end; this gentleman was clearly tired, and nobody can blame him for wanting to soften the loud noise by covering his ears. I myself am wearing earplugs—many people do not want 100 decibels blasting their eardrums”, Robin wrote while narrating the experience on Instagram.
