Screening of Kootenay rainforest film coming to Castlegar

All are invited to a screening of Safe Haven: The Rainbow-Jordan Wilderness.

All are invited to a screening of Damien Gillis and Valhalla Wilderness Society’s new film, Safe Haven: The Rainbow-Jordan Wilderness.

The 30-minute film will be followed by a presentation by Valhalla Wilderness Society (VWS) biologist and campaigner Amber Peters, with stunning photography taken over eight years of research expeditions to the ancient forest.

The Rainbow-Jordan Wilderness is as wild a slice of wilderness as one can hope to find – a rare valley-bottom old growth forest. Working with a team of biologists since 2017 to discover and document the incredible biodiversity of the area, the Valhalla Wilderness Society (VWS) developed a proposal calling on the B.C. Government to protect the area by granting it park status.

The 30-minute film is a call to action for British Columbians, and will be followed by a presentation by VWS biologist and campaigner Amber Peters with stunning photos taken over years of research in the ancient forest.

The West Kootenay Naturalists Association is hosting this event as a public show of support for the VWS’s Rainbow-Jordan Wilderness park proposal.

Since 1975 the Valhalla Wilderness Society has worked to protect irreplaceable wilderness areas through research and advocacy. In 2023, the VWS saw partial victory when the B.C. Government designated another part of our Inland Temperate Rainforest, the Incomappleux Valley, a Conservancy area. Unfortunately, the forests Valhalla Wilderness Society are working to protect are at risk, and major public support is needed to change that.

The event takes place at the Castle Theatre (185 Columbia Ave.) on Saturday, March 15. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film starts at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation and free for members of the West Kootenay Naturalists Association.
