Section 31 Movie Sets Very Unfortuante Rotten Tomatoes Record
Of the now 14 Star Trek movies, the newest, Paramount+’s Star Trek: Section 31, now ranks as the worst-reviewed film in the history of the franchise. Forbes reported that the new Michelle Yeoh-led movie, which premiered on Jan. 24, is also lower than any of the Trek television series as well.
Section 31’s Rotten Tomatoes score puts it at the bottom of the list of all the Trek movies, which began in 1979 with Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise led by James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his team from the original 1966 Star Trek series. The newest film is the first streaming-exclusive movie and follows Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou, who, while running the Baraam nightclub, is tapped to join the covert black-ops division of Starfleet known as Section 31. As of Jan. 30, Section 31 has a 20% Tomatometer score, based on the reviews of 40 critics and a 16% audience score with more than 1,000 ratings.

The Final Frontier Has Better Reviews
The only film that comes close to the poor Section 31 ratings is 1989’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, which currently has a 23% critic rating and a 25% audience score. The 2009 film Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams, is the best-reviewed Trek film on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a 94% critic score and a 91% audience score.
Forbes also compared it to the 10 Trek series, all of which have much higher Rotten Tomatoes scores than Section 31. Star Trek: Discovery, the series where Yeoh’s Georgiou character originated, has an 84% critics score, but a much lower audience score of 33%.

What Critics Have to Say About Section 31
Reviewer J. Bryan Lowder of Slate had this to say on Rotten Tomatoes about Section 31: “While it’s now unavoidably and unfortunately canon, let’s hope Section 31 was just a stumble on the way to better and bolder things. If this is what the Federation’s underbelly really looks like, I’d rather it stayed in the dark.” Zaki Hasan of the San Fransisco Chronicle said this on Rotten Tomatoes: “Whatever this film hoped to accomplish, it ultimately reflects nothing of the legacy it’s supposed to uphold.”
CBR called Section 31 the most deliberately different Star Trek project yet, saying it feels like “the first episode of a larger story,” which is not necessarily a bad thing. “In many ways, Section 31 is a test case for Star Trek’s future. The story and characters are new to this universe, which could attract new viewers along with diehard fans. It expands what kinds of stories this universe can tell, as well,” stated CBR’s review.

Fan Reaction to the Movie
As far as fan reaction on Rotten Tomatoes, reviewer Stephen B. said it was “one of the worst films I have ever watched.” Victor U. posted a review on the site saying, “It’s difficult to express the degree to which this movie disappoints. On the one hand, it’s a bold new direction for Star Trek as an IP. On the other hand, it takes the legacy and promise of decades worth of sci-fi centered mystery, wonder, and hope and reduces it to a cheap, often self-contradictory action flick that’s not even especially interesting when you get down to it.”
For those wanting to see for themselves what Section 31 is like, it is streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
