Shawn Levy’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Offered Villain Role to Jesse Plemons

Star Wars has been dormant on the big screen since The Rise of Skywalker, but Shawn Levy is joining forces with Ryan Gosling on what is slated to be the next film to hit theaters set in a galaxy far, far away. The highly anticipated film, which will follow a brand-new set of characters not from the Skywalker saga, may have found its villain actor.

According to Daniel Richtman, Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, The Power of the Dog) has been offered the role of a villain in Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film that currently does not have a title. As plot details remain scarce, it is unknown who the antagonist will be and if Plemons is in the running to play a well-known character or an entirely new one. Of course, this is a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt for now. It would not be the first time an actor passed on an offer, either, especially in a tumultuous Star Wars series. However, if he were to join Levy and Gosling in what is sure to bring in a new era for the franchise, the talented actor would be a welcome face.

Plemons possibly being up for a major Star Wars role comes off the heels of the news that he is eyeing to join the upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping. He is rumored to be in the running to play Plutarch Heavensbee, previously played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. If he is indeed on Lucasfilm’s radar for the Levy-directed Star Wars film, it would not be shocking if he chooses one over the other as both projects gear up to begin production this year. Meanwhile, Plemons fans can look forward to seeing the actor in the untitled Alejandro G. Iñárritu film starring Tom Cruise, which recently halted production after John Goodman was hospitalized after an on-set injury.

After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker failed to ignite audiences’ love for the franchise, Lucasfilm has been focusing on their streaming content on Disney+, as well as the upcoming Mandalorian film. However, with Shawn Levy’s project, the studio has a chance to create a new big-screen Star Wars adventure not reliant on any kind of nostalgia. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy teased that the project takes place post-Rise of Skywalker and features “all pretty much new characters.”

“That’s also in the future. It’s all post [the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post 9, maybe five or six years out. And Mandalorian really stands on its own because there, we’re dealing with a whole other era in the New Republic. We have other development going on in that space as well. So that’s the space that we’re pretty much focused on right at the moment, because obviously with Mandalorian we have a pretty good sense of where that’s going. And with this, it’s all pretty much new characters. We may bring some of the characters back from the sequel saga, but pretty much new characters.”

The untitled Shawn Levy Star Wars movie currently does not have a release date, but it is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2027.
