‘Shin Godzilla’ to Get 4K Release on HBO Max Alongside Several Other Films
One of the best Godzilla films of all time has landed a new streaming home on HBO Max, where subscribers will be able to watch it for the first time in 4K. Shin Godzilla (aka Godzilla: Resurgence) first stomped into theaters in July 2016, and now, nearly a decade later, the critically acclaimed kaiju epic is having a true resurgence. The Toho film is heading back to U.S. theaters before shifting to streaming sometime later in 2025 or 2026, as part of HBO Max and GKids’ expanded partnership that includes 20 additional live-action and animated titles.
Godzilla will be in good company on HBO Max, as the streamer is already the exclusive home of the world-renowned Studio Ghibli catalog in the United States, and it is now adding a new batch of titles as part of its licensing deal with GKids. According to a press release, the hit film Shin Godzilla, which hails from director Hideaki Anno and co-director Shinji Higuchi, will arrive on the platform alongside several other acclaimed films after an initial wave of new content on Sept. 1, 2025, but an exact premiere date for the feature has yet to be announced.

Shin Godzilla is the 31st entry in a long-running film series that centers around the titular character, a prehistoric reptilian monster awakened and powered by nuclear radiation. It was also Toho’s third official reboot of the monster franchise. The film will celebrate its 10-year anniversary on July 29, 2026, which could yet coincide with the release of its 4K remaster on HBO Max. However, there is a possibility that it will debut on the platform ahead of that milestone. It could arrive shortly after its return to theaters, which is slated for Aug. 14, 2025.
‘Shin Godzilla’ Is Widely Regarded as One of the Best Godzilla Films
Toho Co., Ltd.
Regarded by many as one of the best Godzilla films ever made, Shin Godzilla held the record as the highest-grossing film in the series until it was toppled by Godzilla Minus One last year. The film grossed $79 million at the worldwide box office, which was no doubt boosted by the positive word of mouth from fans and critics, particularly in Japan. It received a more mixed reception from Western audiences at the time, though many have grown to appreciate its mastery and unique approach to the kaiju genre, particularly its realistic portrayal.
Shin Godzilla holds an 86% critics score and 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Godzilla’s highest-rated entries, with many lauding the film as a successful reboot that presents a new story about the radioactive creature rising from the sea and evolving as he tears Tokyo apart in a thunderous rampage. Reviewers also praised its special effects, particularly the depiction of Godzilla’s various forms, as well as its social commentary on the government’s response to crises, making it one of the most influential films in the franchise.
