Silverthorne’s Red Gerard earns spot on 2026 Winter Olympics team
On Thursday, May 1, the Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard team formally announced the first two athletes to officially qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Spearheading qualifications for the men’s slopestyle and big air team is Silverthorne’s Red Gerard. Gerard secured his spot by ranking as the top American among the top three athletes on the World Snowboard Points List as of May 1.
Gerard took the second overall spot on the World Snowboard Points List in men’s slopestyle.
Gerard started the 2024-25 season on a relatively quiet note before earning his first podium of the season at the Laax Open. Gerard then successfully defended his X Games medal in Aspen before capping off the season with a slopestyle silver medal in Calgary.
After winning a slopestyle gold medal for Summit County at his first Olympic Games in 2018, Gerard could not be more thrilled to represent Team USA in 2026.
“I am beyond excited to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics,” said Gerard. “Going into the season, I had one goal: to finish in the top three of the WSPL and lock up an Olympic spot. At first I wasn’t too sure if I was going to be able to reach it, but as the season went on this goal felt more and more obtainable. It was the most I’ve ever competed in one year.”
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim is the other athlete to earn a spot at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Similar to Gerard, Kim had a historic 2024-25 World Cup season. Winning gold at the World Championships for the third time in her career, Kim ended the season as the leader of the World Snowboard Points List in women’s halfpipe.
The remaining Olympic spots will be filled based on upcoming World Cup events throughout the 2025-26 season.
