‘Sinners’ Breaks Box Office Record as Highest-Grossing Original Film
Audiences can’t get enough of Sinners, as the new horror thriller not only surpassed opening weekend projections, but the final box office numbers were also higher than what was initially reported on Easter Sunday. Sinners is the fifth film from director Ryan Coogler, and his first original film not based on a true story or a pre-existing IP. With a cast led by Michael B. Jordan, great trailers, and exceptional word of mouth from both critics and audiences, Sinners rode a wave of good buzz to defy expectations and take the number one spot at the box office from A Minecraft Movie, the expected winner of the holiday weekend.

Why the Jim Crow South is Perfect Vampire Territory for ‘Sinners’
There are many reasons why the setting of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s film ‘Sinners’ is perfect for a story about true sin and real monsters.
Variety reports that Sinners opened to $48 million over the Easter holiday weekend, $2.4 million above the Sunday projections, which had predicted the movie would earn $45.6 million. Not only did that put Sinners in the number one spot at the box office, but it’s also the highest-grossing opening for an original film released so far this decade, beating out the $44 million that Nope pulled in July 2022. It is also the highest-grossing opening weekend for an original movie since Us, which grossed $71 million back in March 2019.
‘Sinners’ is a Mega Hit at the Box Office
At $48 million, Sinners usurped Ready Player One to become the seventh highest-grossing film released over the Easter holiday weekend, coming in behind big-name IP films like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Clash of the Titans. This is just one of many accomplishments the film can claim, as Sinners is also the first horror film in 35 years to earn an A rating on CinemaScore from polled audiences. With a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences and critics are in agreement about Sinners, and this opening weekend box office looks like only the beginning.
While some outlets have tried to put an asterisk on Sinners‘ success, noting the movie’s $90 million production budget as something standing in the way of profitability, the fact that the movie grossed $48 million domestically and $61 million worldwide is, by every metric, a success for an original film, particularly one that’s rated R. The overwhelmingly positive word of mouth suggests Sinners will have a strong hold over the following weeks and into the summer movie season. Sinners now seems poised to top the box office in its second weekend, while new releases like Until Dawn and The Accountant 2 might have to settle for second place.
That also doesn’t account for the secondary profits the movie will likely earn from digital and Blu-ray sales, combined with streaming licenses and sales from the film’s incredible soundtrack. Sinners is undoubtedly going to pay off for Warner Bros. Discovery, particularly if word of mouth is strong enough to carry the film over into the Academy Awards race later in the year. Sinners is becoming a cultural phenomenon, one that will continue to grow in popularity in the coming weeks. While original films like Black Bag, Drop, and Novocaine certainly struggled at the box office in 2025, Sinners is a positive sign that, with the right director, actors, and marketing push, an original film can connect with audiences on the same level as a franchise movie.
