Sjöberg’s Fifth Scholar-Athlete Award Highlights Patriot League Academic Honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Junior Vera Sjöberg of the Boston University women’s track & field team was named the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year for the outdoor track & field season and the Terriers had five athletes named to the Academic All-Patriot League squad.
 
Joining Sjöberg on the Academic All-PL squad is junior Peace Omonzane, graduate student Alli Lofquist, senior Asia Hamilton and junior Ijeoma Ezechukwu.

Sjöberg won the 1500m and 5000m at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships and was named Track Athlete of the Meet, setting meet records in both events with 4:14.37 (1500m) and 16:11.40 (5000m) times. Sjöberg ranks eighth in the NCAA East Region in the 1500m with a 4:09.79 mark and is 11th in the East in the 5000m with a 15:40.76 time, both of which are school records.

In the classroom, the Stockholm, Sweden native is an English major and boasts a 3.97 GPA. This is her fifth Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor and she becomes the sixth PL athlete to complete the sweep of cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards after winning each of the three honors this year.

Omonzane, a Brampton, Ontario native, set meet records in the long jump (6.44m) and the triple jump (13.06m) at the PL Outdoor Championships, winning both events and earning Field Athlete of the Meet honors. In the NCAA East Region, Omonzane’s long jump mark of 6.44m ranks seventh and her 13.06m triple jump is ninth.

Omonzane currently owns a 3.87 GPA and is majoring in psychology. This is her second straight season being named to the Academic All-PL team.

Lofquist finished third in the pole vault at the PL Outdoor Championships, breaking her own school record by eclipsing a 3.97m bar and earning her first career Patriot League medal. Lofquist has a 4.00 GPA as a graduate student enrolled in an Education & Human Development, Teaching & Learning Specialization master’s program. This is her first time being named to the Academic All-PL Team.

Hamilton medaled in three events at the PL Championships, taking bronze in the high jump (1.69m) and triple jump (12.39m) and earning silver in the long jump (6.10m). Hamilton’s season-best mark of 6.12m in the long jump ranks her 38th in the NCAA East Region. In the classroom, Hamilton is a film & television major with a minor in deaf studies and owns a 3.85 GPA. This is her fourth time being named to the Academic All-PL Team.

Ezechukwu had a breakout PL Championships, running a 23.84 time in the 200m final to finish second and earn a silver medal. Her wind-legal mark of 24.30 in the preliminary round ranks seventh at BU all-time. She is a psychology major with a minor in public health and boasts a 3.81 GPA. This is her first time being named to the Academic All-PL Team.
