Sky New Zealand (NZ), the country’s pay-TV giant, has secured broadcast rights for the Olympic Games through 2032 after months of speculation.

The agreement, struck with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will see Sky NZ provide exclusive coverage for the next two summer Olympics – the 2028 games in Los Angeles and the 2032 edition in Brisbane.

The broadcaster will also air the next two Winter Olympics, including the upcoming 2026 event in Milano-Cortina and the 2030 games in the French Alps.

Coverage will span across Sky’s platforms, including the Sky Sports linear channel, Sky Sport Now streaming app, and the Sky Open free-to-air network, as well as its newly acquired FTA platforms, Three and ThreeNow.

Sky chief executive Sophie Moloney said: “The recent acquisition of Three and ThreeNow was a game-changer in securing these rights. It significantly strengthened our free-to-air offering, meaning we can reach more New Zealanders than ever before, across more platforms, with more choice.”

The deal comes a month after Sky NZ confirmed it was in discussions with the IOC over a new rights agreement for LA28, following reports that FTA network TVNZ was looking to win the rights.

Sky has held rights to all editions of the summer and Winter Olympics since 2010, taking over from TVNZ, which held the rights up until 2008 (and sub-licensed the event from Sky in 2020).

The most recent agreement, covering the 2018-24 period, extended across the Pacific region, including the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Independent State of Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

Earlier in 2025, Sky NZ also retained the exclusive rights to the Commonwealth Games multi-sport event for its 2026 edition.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, UK, from July 23 to August 2, as a scaled-down version featuring 10 different sports, following Victoria, Australia’s withdrawal from its hosting commitments due to the rising cost of staging the event.

TVNZ, meanwhile, landed the rights to soccer’s elite FIFA World Cup 2026 back in August, replacing Sky and hotting up the pair’s media rights arms race.

In terms of recent rights acquisitions, Sky NZ announced it will continue to air the iconic Formula 1 motor racing series until at least 2028, as well as the Supercars touring racing series from Australia until 2029.

Earlier this year, the broadcaster also secured rights to games and competitions organized by the New Zealand Rugby governing body until 2030. It also extended its partnership with US golf’s PGA Tour until at least 2030.
