Sky Sports pundit tips Ipswich Town signing to be a “surprise package”

Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes Spanish striker Ivan Azon could be a “surprise package” in the Championship after signing for Ipswich Town on loan from Italian outfit Como.

It had been a transfer saga that had taken many twists and turns, with it previously being reported that a deal between Ipswich and Azon had collapsed.

But before the transfer deadline, the Tractor Boys renewed their interest and have managed to bring the 22-year-old to Portman Road on a season-long loan deal.

After scoring 27 goals and providing nine assists in 150 appearances for Spanish side Real Zarazoga, Azon made the move to Como in February, but he has not made a single appearance for the Serie A side, hence his move to England.

He will now be looking to get back on the goalscoring trail, as he battles it out for a starting spot with George Hirst and Chuba Akpom.

With this news in mind, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has weighed in with his thoughts on whether this transfer will be a success.

Lee Hendrie hails Ivan Azon as potential “surprise package” for Ipswich Town

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes striker Ivan Azon can be a “surprise package” in Suffolk, believing Tractor Boys supporters should be excited about his talent.

Hendrie said: “Yeah, it’s an interesting signing for Ipswich having obviously lost Delap, they’ve got a very good striker in Hirst, but would want a replacement of something similar of quality, and Ivan Azon, I know he’s at Como, he scored goals at Real Zaragoza, so he’s definitely got some form of talent, a young Spanish player.

“I think this will be one to certainly keep an eye on. I know it’s a loan move to Ipswich, but this might be one that could be a surprise package, one to really keep your eyes on.

“It’s certainly a backup for Hirst, who plays up top for them, but it will be interesting to keep an eye on the exciting talent that he has.”

Despite possessing some good Championship options up top on paper in George Hirst and Chuba Akpom, it hasn’t quite clicked in front of goal yet, with Hirst only scoring once so far this term and Akpom being eased into first-team duties.

It’s been a tough time recently for Azon in Italy too, and he will have to show he has what it takes to be an asset in the second-tier from the bench, if he is to stake a claim for a regular starting spot.

The signing of the young Spanish striker does add more depth over the course of the Championship season, but is a gamble given it’s his first spell in English football.

However, it could be a deal worth risking due to the lack of end product Ipswich have suffered from in the opening four games so far, with the club hoping they have unearthed a gem who suits the English game down to the ground.
