Sofia Coppola to Be Honored at Museum of Modern Art Film Benefit
It will be a night at the museum starring Sofia Coppola.
The Oscar winning filmmaker and longtime Chanel collaborator and ambassador has been tapped to be the marquee honoree at the Museum of Modern Art’s film benefit in New York on Nov. 12. The fashionable affair is presented by the fashion house. As part of the shine, MoMA will roll out a special exhibition, Sofia Coppola: A Tribute, scheduled for Oct. 30 — Nov. 16.
The program will also cover screenings of all nine of her films in the Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, a list that includes The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, The Bling Ring, The Beguiled, On the Rocks, Priscilla and the new documentary Marc by Sofia. (Also included will be her short film, Lick the Star, and others.) Five of those films are in MoMA’s collection, and the honor marks another bit of homecoming for the filmmaker as she previously was the subject of an exhibition in 2004, A Work in Progress: The Films of Sofia Coppola.
“Developing long-term relationships with artists is one of the profound privileges and responsibilities for an institution like MoMA. Sofia Coppola has been a part of the Museum’s artist family since her emergence as an acclaimed director over 25 years ago,” said Rajendra Roy, MoMA’s Celeste Bartos chief curator of film. “We celebrated her in 2004 as a part of our Work in Progress series, and we are thrilled to welcome her back now as a field-leading icon.
Chanel, a longtime champion of the cinematic arts, has been a sponsor of the MoMA’s annual Film Benefit since 2011 and has served as the lead sponsor of film at MoMA since 2021. Coppola follows last year’s honoree, Samuel L. Jackson, and the full roster of previous MoMA Film Benefit honorees includes Guillermo del Toro, Penélope Cruz, George Clooney, Laura Dern, Martin Scorsese, Julianne Moore, Tom Hanks, Cate Blanchett, Alfonso Cuarón, Tilda Swinton, Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodóvar, Kathryn Bigelow, Tim Burton and Baz Luhrmann.
