Somalia disaster agency pushes for greater women’s role in humanitarian response

MOGADISHU — Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has launched a high-level forum aimed at strengthening the role of women in the country’s humanitarian response efforts.

Speaking at the opening of the forum, SoDMA Commissioner Mohamud Moallim Abdulle emphasized the need for inclusive aid operations that effectively address the specific needs of women and girls, particularly in crisis-affected communities.

The event, held in Mogadishu, brought together representatives from international and local organizations, including the UN Women country director for Somalia and members of the Somali NGO Consortium.

Discussions focused on enhancing coordination between Women-Led Organizations (WLOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and SoDMA to ensure more effective and gender-responsive humanitarian action.

A key outcome of the forum was the agreement to establish a regular coordination mechanism between WLOs and officials working within the Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA) framework — a move expected to improve collaboration and information sharing across partners.

The forum comes amid growing calls for greater participation of women in shaping humanitarian priorities in Somalia, where conflict, climate shocks, and displacement continue to drive widespread humanitarian needs.
