The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of heavy rain and possible snowfall across several regions as a cold front sweeps through the country. The adverse weather, expected to begin in the Western Cape before moving eastward, has prompted government officials to urge citizens to take precautions.

Government Calls for Vigilance

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa emphasized the need for public awareness and preparedness. Speaking after his return from a disaster risk reduction conference in Geneva, Hlabisa highlighted lessons learned from past weather-related disasters.

“We must be proactive, not reactive,” he said, stressing the importance of early warnings and resilient infrastructure. The minister noted that South Africa is reviewing its disaster management systems to improve response times and mitigate damage.

Regions at Risk

The cold front is expected to bring:

  • Heavy rain and damaging winds in the Western Cape (already experiencing downpours).

  • Snowfall in parts of the Northern and Western Cape from Monday, spreading to other regions.

  • Extremely cold temperatures in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.

Authorities have warned travelers to avoid affected roads if closures are announced.

Disaster Preparedness Efforts

Hlabisa acknowledged past shortcomings in disaster prevention but assured that coordination between national, provincial, and local governments has improved. Funds have been allocated for infrastructure repairs, with stricter monitoring to prevent mismanagement.

“Money must go to resilient infrastructure that withstands climate challenges,” he said, adding that South Africa is exploring advanced weather technology and international partnerships for better forecasting.

Public Advisory

Residents in affected areas are urged to:

  • Monitor weather updates via official channels.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall (Monday-Tuesday).

  • Heed road closure notices to prevent accidents.

With the cold front intensifying, the government remains on high alert to minimize disruptions and protect vulnerable communities.
