South African agricultural exports to US surge despite tariffs

The South African agricultural sector has marked a significant achievement in the second quarter of 2025, with exports to the United States reaching US$161 million, reflecting a 26% increase compared to the same period in 2024, Cape {town} Etc reports.

This surge comes amid challenging global trade conditions, highlighting the sector’s adaptability and the quality of produce being offered.

‘Our agricultural exports are not only competitive; they are thriving,’ remarked Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen. This positive trend follows a robust first quarter of 2025 when exports to the US amounted to US$118 million, indicating 19% year-on-year growth.

The data encapsulates not just the economic vigor of a vital sector but also the potential of South African farmers to push boundaries in international markets.

Despite this surge, Minister Steenhuisen emphasised the urgent necessity to diversify export markets in light of recent developments.

The 30% tariff on South African exports to the US serves as a cautionary signal, spotlighting the vulnerability of relying solely on this significant market.

‘We must enhance our competitiveness to mitigate the economic impact of losing preferential trade access,’ he asserted, reinforcing the need for proactive measures in navigating the changing economic landscape.

The variety of products leading the surge in exports showcases the depth of the South African agricultural sector’s offerings.

Products such as citrus fruits, grapes, apples, and pears, alongside nuts and wine, comprise the backbone of this growth.

Steenhuisen attributed these accomplishments to a combination of favourable harvests, quality produce and efficient port operations, which have collectively bolstered the capacity for international trade.

As the South African Government continues to engage in pivotal diplomatic negotiations with the US regarding trade agreements, securing stable long-term access to this important market remains a top priority.

Steenhuisen affirmed, ‘It is crucial that our farmers and exporters have the opportunity to thrive within a fair global marketplace.’
