HAMMOND, La. – David Mertens has been named the general manager of the Southeastern Louisiana University football program, SLU head football coach Frank Scelfo announced Wednesday.
Mertens served as the program’s director of player personnel in 2024. In his new role, which is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors, Mertens will work closely with Scelfo and oversee all aspects of the program’s daily operations.
“We’re excited to name David our first general manager,” Scelfo commented. “David is a key member of our staff and has a firm grasp on our culture and what the expectations for our program. We expect David to play a vital role in helping us navigate the ever-changing landscape of college football.”
Mertens will lead the evaulations of the Lions’ current roster and future prospects. He will also assist with team travel arrangements and coordinating the program’s operating budget.
Scelfo sees Mertens’ role of organizing all aspects of the team’s fall camp critical to getting the season off on the right foot. Mertens will also serve as the liaison with the professional leagues, helping to facilitate the current Lions’ goals of reaching the NFL, CFL, UFL and European Football League.
Mertens will also oversee the program’s community service efforts, as SLU Football continues to adhere to Southeastern Athletics’ expectations of excellence in the community, in the classroom and in competition.
SLU opens spring practice March 11 and will practice Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during spring drills, which run through April 12. The 2025 season kicks off Aug. 30, when the Lions travel to Louisiana Tech.
