Two Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School students recently took home first place at the Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair.

Olutayo Oyewusi and Finnegan Sommer earned the award for their project, “TheraBee: Revolutionizing Mental Health Care Through AI-Driven Detection and Personalized Support,” according to a community announcement.

Their project was one of 13 to receive first place at the fair, which was held April 4 at Gillette Stadium.

Another Southeastern student, Valerie Lindh, also participated in the fair with her project, “Investigation of the Impact of Soil Microorganisms on the Growth of Vigna Radiata.”

The three students qualified for the state fair by winning third place at the Massachusetts Region V Science & Engineering Fair on March 8 at Bridgewater State University. They advanced to the regional stage after excelling in the Southeastern Independent Scientific Research Fair on Feb. 4.

“Congratulations to our three students who made it to the Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair,” Acting Principal Christina Guarini said. “This was an arduous process that required meticulous, steadfast work on all of their parts. These projects were thought-provoking and explored intriguing topics using scientific rigor and ingenuity. These students were also able to present their findings in a cogent way before the judges. This will be an experience that they will take with them for the rest of their lives, serving as a foundation for them as they continue to pursue an education in the fields of science and engineering.”

Superintendent Holly McClanan also praised the students’ achievements.

“These exceptional science and engineering projects showcased a depth of understanding and a commitment to inquiry that surpassed all of our expectations,” McClanan said. “It takes a lot of hard work to make it to the state level. We couldn’t be more proud of the high caliber of work presented by our students. It reflects the impressive dedication shown by our students and our teachers to the fields of science and engineering. And it also reflects the type of work that we have come to expect to come out of our science program at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School. Congratulations to Olutayo, Finnegan and Valerie for this incredible accomplishment.”

Three other Southeastern students also presented at the regional fair. Matthew Sawyer’s project was titled “Engineering a Piezoelectric Battery,” while Fiona Dunn and Milo Williams co-presented “Ground Nesters in 2020.”

The Southeastern Independent Scientific Research Fair featured more than 95 projects exploring both the scientific method and engineering.
