“I spent a lot of time living in Southend and Westcliff in the 1980s before moving to London to pursue a career in the music industry,” said Alan, who runs record label, Conquest Music.
“When I started my label, I wanted to use it to showcase the music legends of Southend but also help promote the newer acts who are still on their way up.
“The plan for this weekend’s festival is to shine a spotlight on both of those groups, with Sunday dedicated to newer artists and Monday being all about the old guard.”
Talent – The Ondines will be brining their signature upbeat sound to Chinnery’s (Image: Alan Bambrough) Among those set to take to Chinnery’s seafront stage are David Woodcock, Tuppenny Bunters, Willie Dowling, Steve Hooker and Jives.
Attendees will also have the chance to purchase 60 Years of the Southend Scene – Alan’s recently released album that features vocal performances from some of the city’s most noteworthy and exciting artists.
Alan, who now lives in the North Pennines but is returning to Southend this weekend, has his own theory of why the city has such a strong musical legacy and landscape.
Iconic – Chinnery’s will play host to this weekend’s festival (Image: Google Maps) “Following the dark days of post war austerity, there seemed to be a weight of responsibility lifted from the shoulders of the youth,” he said.
“Not least due to its proximity to London, Southend was a very popular holiday destination and easily accessible by train and road.
“To accommodate that massive influx of fun-seekers, the area needed to have way more entertainment venues than other towns of a similar population, which in turn brought a big demand for entertainers and so many more places to play as a musician.”
Adding: “Whatever the reason, South Essex has long punched above its weight in producing musical talent.”
Beloved – Steve Hooker is set to dazzle with his Chinnery’s performance (Image: Alan Bambrough) Southend Scene Spring Festival will run from 3pm to 10pm on Sunday and from 3pm to 9pm on Monday, with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.
