ORANGE PARK — St. Johns Country Day School is proud to announce that it has been
named the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 1A Floyd E. Lay Sunshine
Cup All-Sports Award Champion for the 2024–25 school year. The recognition is awarded
annually to the top overall athletic program in each classification in the state of Florida, based on
cumulative performance in FHSAA State Series competition.
The Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards, presented by the FHSAA, honor the state’s
most successful high school athletic programs. Points are awarded to schools based on their
finish in FHSAA State Series competition across all sports, with additional points for district and
regional championships and deductions for unsporting conduct. St. Johns Country Day excelled
across multiple sports during the 2024–25 school year, earning enough points to secure the top
spot in Class 1A.
“I am incredibly proud of the efforts of our student-athletes and coaches at St. Johns,” said
Director of Athletics John Sgromolo. “For our student-athletes to achieve greatness on the field
while balancing the academic rigor of our school is truly admirable. This is the highest honor
FHSAA awards to an athletics department, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
St. Johns excelled in girls soccer (state title), baseball (state runnerup), track and field (4 x 800 girls state qualifiers), cross country (girls state qualifiers), tennis (doubles, singles boys and girls state qualifers), basketball (girls, boys region qualifiers), boys soccer (region qualifiers), softball (region qualifier), golf (state meet qualifier Addy Vogt), girls weightlifting (region qualifiers) and swimming (individual region qualifiers).
Last year, St. Johns was sixth overall in Class 2A; fifth for girls and 13th for boys.
St. Johns was one of just 200 schools of the nearly 900 schools in the FHSAA that did not have a points deduction for any unsportsmanlike conducts or ejections.
The FHSAA has named champions for each classification, with this year’s winners including:
● Class 7A: Winter Park
● Class 6A: St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale)
● Class 5A: Ponte Vedra
● Class 4A: Mater Lakes (Hialeah)
● Class 3A: Bolles (Jacksonville)
● Class 2A: Benjamin (Palm Beach Gardens)
● Class 1A: St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park)
● Class 1R: Fort White
Points are awarded in team sports for state championships (20 points), state runner-up finishes
(12 points), semifinal appearances (9 points), and top 8–16 placements, along with bonuses for
St. Johns Country Day School.
In addition to athletic excellence, the award system also
prioritizes sportsmanship, with point deductions for unsporting conduct incidents.
The Sunshine Cup honors the legacy of Floyd E. Lay, a long-serving FHSAA executive director,
whose vision was to recognize the state’s top overall athletic programs.
