Speaker Bagbin commissions Yamoransa Model Lab 14 to boost STEAM education in Kaleo

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, commissioned the Yamoransa Model (YM) Lab 14 at Kaleo in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region.

The 36-seater EDULAB, designed to provide a conducive learning environment for over 3,439 students—comprising 1,788 males and 1,651 females from 10 selected schools in the Kaleo community—aims to enhance digital literacy and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education.

The state-of-the-art facility, initiated at the Speaker’s request, was fully financed by Bagbin as part of his commitment to advancing STEAM education in his district.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Rt. Hon. Bagbin explained that the project aims to equip deprived communities with modern ICT centres, educational content, multimedia resources, and a Maker Space featuring robotics, AR/VR learning, and 3D printing.

He urged students to maximize the facility’s potential to bridge educational gaps in the region.

“I want you to be better than me in the future. In our time, we didn’t have opportunities like this, but you are lucky,” he remarked.

He further emphasized the community’s collective sacrifice to bring the facility to Kaleo, saying, “Those who know my house in Sombo will see that it is not as beautiful as this, yet we have all sacrificed to make this happen.”

Dr Deborah Rose, President of the Helping Africa Foundation (HAF), highlighted the EDULAB project’s role as a centre for modern technology and learning resources that fosters innovation, creativity, research, and leadership development among students.

The Helping Africa Foundation funded the technology and equipment, with IMPLEMENTERS serving as the project managers. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with TECHAiDE, the Ghana Education Service, the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, and the Traditional Council.

With the commissioning of YM Lab 14, Ghana now has 14 Yamoransa Model Labs across 13 regions, along with additional labs in Gambia and Liberia.

This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Good Health and Well-being.

The project marks another significant step in enhancing technology-driven education in Ghana and beyond.
