Special Olympics World Winter Games: Team Ireland’s Caolan McConville and Lucy Best win gold

Caolan McConville and Lucy Best won skiing gold medals for Team Ireland at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Italy on Wednesday.

McConville, from Aghagallon in County Antrim, triumphed in the advanced giant slalom final in Turin with a time of one minute 15.04 seconds.

The 21-year-old was initially entered in the intermediate event before being promoted to the advanced category on Tuesday.

McConville became the first Team Ireland athlete to compete in the advanced division in alpine skiing.

It was McConville’s second Games appearance after competing as a 13-year-old in Austria in 2017, where he won a silver and bronze medal.

Ballinderry’s Best, 33, also topped the podium in the novice division, completing her run in 1:59.03.
