SpiceJet Unveils Paperless Boarding Passes via WhatsApp at Shillong Airport, ETTravelWorld

Image credit – iStock-825417418 SpiceJet has rolled out a paperless boarding system at Shillong Airport, making it the first airline in India to issue boarding passes through WhatsApp at airport check-in counters. The move is designed to offer passengers a faster, more sustainable travel experience while improving operational efficiency.

Passengers checking in at the airport counter will now receive their boarding pass directly on WhatsApp, eliminating the need for printed copies. The initiative is part of the airline’s broader digital innovation strategy and commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

SpiceJet estimates that in June 2025 alone, more than nine million boarding passes were still printed at airports across India, generating approximately six tonnes of carbon emissions. By shifting to digital boarding passes, the airline aims to significantly cut down on avoidable emissions linked to paper use in aviation operations.

The service is powered by SpiceJet’s indigenously developed Web Departure Control System (WEBDCS). This browser-based platform enables check-in staff to issue boarding passes via WhatsApp or email, and baggage tags through SMS, using either tablets or standard airport check-in systems. The technology reduces check-in times while enhancing efficiency for airport operations.

SpiceJet plans to gradually expand the paperless boarding initiative to other airports in India, aligning with the aviation industry’s growing focus on sustainability and passenger convenience.
