Sports briefs: Union football’s Goldstien, Fiore honored – The Daily Gazette
Union College football’s Spencer Goldstien and Michael Fiore received weekly honors.
Goldstien, a senior linebacker, was named Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week. He had a team-leading 10 tackles in Saturday’s 44-7 victory over St. Lawrence. He also had a sack and an interception.
Goldstien is second on the team in tackles with 45 and leads the Dutchmen with 2.5 sacks.
Fiore, a junior running back, was named to the weekly D3football.com Team of the Week.
Fiore rushed for 126 yards and four touchdowns, the most touchdowns by a Union running back since Chris Coney did it against Rochester on Sept. 27, 2008.
UAlbany QB Poffenbarger recognized again
For the third time this season, UAlbany freshman quarterback Reese Poffenbarger was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week.
Poffenbarger completed 22 of 39 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 38-31 loss at Monmouth.
Poffenbarger won the award Sept. 19 and Sept. 26.
Six RPI athletes win Liberty League weekly awards
Six RPI athletes were recognized by the Liberty League.
Freshman Tessa Bossom, a Shenendehowa graduate, was named Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week. Bosom helped the Engineers to a second-place finish at the 26th Annual James Earley Invitational, where she finished second on RPI and 16th overall in a time of 19:38.27 on the 5k course.
Senior Patricia Christensen was named Women’s Diver of the Week. She won from the 3-meter diving board with 213.00 points, and was sixth in the 1-meter competition, Patricia was sixth with 176.25 points against RIT.
Freshman Brady Geisler earned Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week. Brady led the Engineers to a first-place finish at the Early Invitational hosted by Westfield State as he was the top RPI finisher and placed sixth overall in 25:43.13 on the 8k course.
Junior Leah Goodloe took Women’s Cross Country Performer of the Week. She was the top RPI runner in the Early Invitational, and 12th overall, in 19:28.01.
Graduate student Joey Harrigan won Men’s Golf Performer of the Week. At the Skidmore Fall Invitational at Saratoga Spa State Park, Harrigan was second overall with a two-day total of 2-under-par 142.
Freshman Aleksandar Maric was Football Rookie of the Week. Aleksandar was 6 for 6 on point-after-attempts and averaged 53.1 yards on kickoffs in the Engineers’ 42-14 win at Buffalo State on Saturday.
SUNY Cobleskill’s Logan honored
SUNY Cobleskill junior and Queensbury High School graduate Nick Logan was named North Atlantic Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Logan placed third overall in a field of 88 runners at the 2022 MSMC Blue Knight Invitational hosted by Mount Saint Mary’s College at Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton on Saturday, finishing in 27:17.7 on the 8,000-meter course.
