Sports editor Tommy Bryan announces retirement from Wilson Post
Tommy Bryan, the sports editor of the Wilson Post and the Chronicle of Mt. Juliet, has announced that he will retire June 1 after nearly 50 years of writing and broadcasting about the accomplishments of Wilson County athletes.

Bryan helped to create the Tennessee Sports Writers Association and was inducted into the organization’s hall of fame in 2021.
“It’s hard to put into words everything Tommy has meant to Wilson County as well as the Wilson Post and its readers,” Main Street Media of Tennessee owner Dave Gould said (the company publishes the two newspapers). “He is the consummate professional and has set the standard for sports coverage across the state. While we are very sad to see him retire, we are excited that he will have time to relax, travel and enjoy life. Tommy is a one-of-a-kind person and we are honored to have had the opportunity to work with him.”
Bryan is a 1975 graduate of Lebanon High School. He graduated from Cumberland Junior College (now Cumberland University) in 1977 and started working at the Lebanon Democrat. He was owner and publisher of The Wilson World newspaper for 22 years (1981-2003).
Bryan also worked in the sports information offices at Austin Peay, Middle Tennessee State, Cumberland and Trevecca Nazarene.
“When you think about sports writing in Wilson County, Tommy Bryan is at the top of the class. He does so much in this county because he cares about the kids and who they are,” Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto (a former Lebanon High boys basketball coach) said when the announcement of Bryan’s election to the hall of fame was made.
“My first real break came covering Mt. Juliet girls basketball and their run to the 1977 state championship,” Bryan said in 2019. “After that I was hooked on local sports. Since then, I’ve covered the children and now grandchildren of people I played football and went to school with.”
Bryan handled the play-by-play calls for Cumberland football for 12 years and Lebanon High School football for more than 30 years (more than 400 games). He has hosted numerous sports talk shows on WANT-FM and the “Coaches Night Out” weekly broadcast with Wilson County football coaches talking about their teams and upcoming games.
His most visible – and possibly only – significant sports rooting interest outside of Wilson County belongs to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bryan and his wife, Bobbie Kay, are the parents of two adult children, Taylor and Thomas Bryan.
