Sept. 2, 1975 — The Escanaba Eskymos finished. five years short of the end zone in a 7-0 season-opening football loss to Marquette. Tony Erspamer caught a 31-yard pass from Todd Krueger for the game’s only touchdown. Jerry Moran was Esky’s leading rusher with 95 yards on 19 carries.
Marian Tibergien of Lake Bluff Country Club and Bev Farrell of Gladstone retained their Delta County Bestball title with 84 strokes, two better than Mary Hilgendorf and Pat DeVere. Rita Sturdy of Gladstone and LaVerne Paul of Highland placed third at 89.
Sept. 4, 1975 — Marilyn Christiansen became the first women to sink a hole-in-one at Lake Bluff, using a 5-wood on the 138-yard No. 7 hole. Bob Stade then hit his first ace on the No. 5 hole, using a 5-iron.
Sept. 5, 1975 — The Gladstone girls opened their basketball season with a 39-32 victory over the Gwinn Modeltowners. Gail Demeuse led the Braves with 12 points. Beth Lilly scored 14 for Gwinn.
Sept. 6, 1975 — Marty Pyke recovered a blocked punt in the end zone in the final 32 seconds, lifting the Rapid River Rockets to a 21-14 football triumph over the Powers North Central Jets. Rapid River’s Ron Harris rushed for 103 yards and two TDs. North Central’s Bernard Kleikamp caught a 29-yard pass from Steve Maule for a TD and Dan O’Neil got the Jets’ second score on a one-yard plunge.
Aug. 31, 1985 — The Gladstone Braves presented John Mileski with his first victory as head football coach, defeating the Escanaba Eskymos 25-7 in Dan Flynn’s coaching debut. Gladstone’s R. Troy Carlson ran for 100 yards and two TDs and Brian Pelon hit 10-of-19 passes for 143 yards and another score to go with two interceptions. Paul Trudeau added the Braves’ remaining score on a one-yard run. Erik Bessonen got Esky’s lone TD on a 42-yard interception return.
The Rapid River Rockets played under the lights for the first time on their home field and posted a 21-0 victory over the Engadine Eagles. Al Viau rushed for 77 yards, including a 12-yard TD, and collected 21 tackles. Tom Thibault hit 7-of-8 passes for 120 yards, including one for 25 to Tom Fix. Paul Stage caught a 19-yard aerial for another score.
Sept. 4, 1985 — Amy Hastings scored 11 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, leading the Manistique girls to a 35-30 basketball triumph over the Newberry Indians. Amy Kraatz added 10 points and 10 boards.
Sept. 6, 1985 — Rock Mid Peninsula’s first appearance in its new gym was successful in a 54-45 victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves. Kristin Depuydt led the Wolverines with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Tammy Hanson also grabbed 12 boards. Carolyn Blahnik paced the Wolves with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Deirdre Johnson finished with 12 points.
