St Mark’s pupils enjoy inclusive wheelchair basketball event

St Mark’s CofE Primary School promoted a culture of inclusion, resilience, and mutual respect with a new experience.

Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a unique opportunity to experience wheelchair basketball first-hand.

Led by specialist coaches with lived experience of disability, the session aimed to raise awareness about adaptive sports, promote empathy, and encourage teamwork.

Children navigated the court, mastering new skills and developing a fresh perspective on what it means to be an athlete.

The session was part of the school’s wider commitment to inclusivity and its PSHE curriculum focus on understanding difference and celebrating diversity.

Year 6 teacher, Mrs Whittaker, said: “The children absolutely loved the experience. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow as they adapted to the wheelchairs and embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and respect.”

One Year 6 pupil said: “It was harder than I thought, but really fun! I’ve got so much respect for people who play wheelchair sports all the time.”

This sparked thoughtful discussion and reflection among the students.

St Mark’s CofE Primary School is committed to offering enriching experiences that open young minds to the wider world.
