Starlink India launching soon: Latest update, expected price, Aadhaar integration and more – Technology News
Elon Musk’s satellite internet broadband service, Starlink, is almost on the verge of its long-anticipated launch in the Indian market. The satellite internet service, which has awaited regulatory approvals for years, now seems to be cleared for its launch in India. The company has joined hands with local telecom players like Airtel and Reliance Jio to extend its services to the masses.
While a specific launch date has not been officially announced, the service is expected to go live within the next few months, with reports suggesting a debut by the end of 2025. This could open up a new avenue of satellite connectivity in India, thus extending border internet coverage in remote areas.
Starlink India launch: Latest update
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Indian government has capped Starlink’s user base at two million connections initially. This move has been implemented to ensure a balanced entry and prevent disruption to the existing telecom ecosystem. This decision by the Indian government aims to complement the current ecosystem rather than disrupt it, focusing instead on delivering high-speed internet connectivity to remote regions.
Prior to this, Starkink successfully cleared a major regulatory hurdle by receiving a Unified License from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
In another key development for customer onboarding, Starlink has partnered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to use Aadhaar-based authentication for customer verification. This collaboration is set to make the sign-up process “smooth, secure, and very easy,” ensuring compliance with KYC norms through a paperless system.
Starlink expected internet speeds
Starlink promises to deliver internet speeds between 25 Mbps and 220 Mbps, depending on the weather conditions and the global location. While this may not impact urban areas with robust fiber networks, it could be transformative for rural India – where connectivity is often inconsistent or non-existent. This high-speed, reliable internet could boost access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities in rural communities as well as help with remote projects.
Starlink India expected prices
As for pricing, initial reports indicate the service will be a premium offering. A one-time installation fee for the required hardware kit is estimated to be between Rs 30,000 and Rs 35,000. The Starlink monthly plans are expected to range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,200, with costs varying by location and data usage.
