Steve Carell Joins Ensemble Cast of Succession Creator’s HBO Movie
The Office star Steve Carell has officially joined the cast of Jesse Armstrong’s upcoming movie for HBO, starring alongside an ensemble cast filled with heavy hitters.
Per Variety, Carell will star alongside Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City), Ramy Youssef (Poor Things) and Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night) in Armstrong’s untitled film for HBO, which is expected to begin filming this month in Utah. Armstrong served as executive producer and showrunner of HBO’s Emmy-winning juggernaut Succession, which concluded its run back in 2023. The untitled film follows ” a group of billionaire friends who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.” His upcoming untitled film for HBO serves as his feature directorial debut.

Succession has repeatedly used bathrooms to expose the true feelings of its normally-guarded cast.
Accompanying the casting announcement, Armstrong issued a statement, sharing his enthusiasm for the upcoming project. “I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on Succession has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so,” the statement reads. “I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.” Armstrong also serves as the writer and executive producer on the untitled project alongside Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, Jon Brown, Tony Roche, Will Tracy, Mark Mylod and Jill Footlick.

Armstrong, who is set to begin production on his untitled project this month, is fresh off the success of the critically acclaimed HBO series, Succession, which won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series three times in its four-season run. The dark comedy series follows the Roy family and the power struggle between the Roy children for control of their father’s global media company. The series earned tons of award recognition and was a massive hit for HBO. The series finale brought in 2.9 million viewers the night it aired and averaged 8.7 million viewers per episode in its final season, according to Variety.
