Paramount’s Street Fighter fought off Universal animation Forgotten Island to top the UK-Ireland box office, as Bollywood action title Jailer 2 made the top five on opening weekend.

Kitao Sakurai’s Street Fighter opened to £2.3m from 594 locations, at a £3,872 average. That tops the £1.6m opening of fellow martial arts video game film Mortal Kombat 2 from May. The latter title went on to a £3.4m total; Street Fighter will look to beat that within the next week then move towards £5m.

Street Fighter’s opening was up on the £619,000 opening of the 1995 film of the same name, and only slightly behind its £2.3m total; it may yet pass it with final weekend figures still to come (figures are not adjusted for inflation).

Universal’s DreamWorks animation Forgotten Island opened to £1.3m from 628 sites at a £2,072 average. That is down on the £1.7m start of the latest DreamWorks title, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, from the equivalent weekend last year; but up on the £885,000 start of the last DreamWorks film not based on pre-existing material, 2023’s Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

Amazon MGM Studios’ latest Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity added £1.1m on its third weekend, falling just one place. Its 44% drop brought it to £9.5m total, well clear of the £6.3m of last year’s Regretting You and £4.5m of this year’s Reminders Of Him among Hoover adaptations, although still behind the £21.9m of 2024’s It Ends With Us.

Last weekend’s number one Other Mommy dropped 54% on its second weekend for Universal, with £924,000 taking it to a £3.8m total.

Bollywood action sequel Jailer 2, about a retired police officer whose life is disrupted when a criminal organisation threatens his family, opened to £754,000 from just 230 sites at a healthy £3,365 average, up on the £728,000 start of the first film in 2023. Jailer 2 has £1.1m already including previews, and will hope to top the £1.3m cume of the first film this week, for distributor TGS Cinemas, with bookings by Boleyn Cinema.

Takings for the top five increased by 3% on last weekend with £6.3m, and are 18% up on the equivalent weekend last year, with a decent spread of titles bringing in money. Next weekend also has a broad spread of genres starting out, including Black Bear stop motion animation Wildwood, Warner Bros’ comic book adaptation Clayface, Lionsgate TV spin off Ghosts: The Possession Of Button House, Amazon MGM Studios’ Ali G: Who Iz I?, and Sony’s literary adaptation Klara And The Sun.

Disney opened Brian Duffield’s survival thriller Whalefall to £508,000 at a £1,015 average from 500 locations.

NAZA, the documentary about Israeli military techniques used to kill Palestinians in Gaza, started with an impressive £173,000 from just 51 sites at a £3,395 average, one of the highest of the weekend. The film, distributed in cinemas by Dogwoof ahead of its free launch on The Guardian website in late November, has £240,000 including previews, and was the number one title in 40 of its 51 sites.
