Mercer is a sensational dancer, but he is in a ballroom and Latin competition and, halfway through the contest, the judges are not going to allow him to get away with it any more (except Du Beke, of course, who was merrily waving anything through tonight). Not so long ago, I thought he could win this contest at a canter. Now, however, I fear he may be in tomorrow’s dance-off.

Biggest leap forward

After seven weeks, it is hard to say who was the most improved this week, so the honour goes to Bethany Antonia… for not improving. After scores of 26, 27, 27, 27 and 25, Antonia finally broke through with a 30 with last week’s jive. Her foxtrot tonight also received 30, suggesting that the House of the Dragon star is heading in the right direction. She and Xu tonight were eloquent and elegant, giving us a performance no other couple could. This may be Antonia’s downfall. Unlike the other couples, we can compare her directly to her partner. And no celebrity, no matter how game they are, will compare well to a professional ballroom dancer.
