Successful musician follows in footsteps of friend Sheeran with visit to Coventry

A MUSICIAN friend of Ed Sheeran who plays in James Blunt’s band returned to his home city of Coventry to encourage youngsters to follow in his footsteps.

Singer-songwriter John Garrison, a former Finham Park student, was invited by Coventry Music to meet its students and tour some of the city’s venues.

The visit, arranged in partnership with the Ed Sheeran Foundation, came just a month after the chart-topper’s own surprise visit to the city.

John, who is currently touring as a bass player with James Blunt, visited the city to help inspire students.

As well as performing, John also writes his own music, produces and remixes, and composes for TV and film – with credits for Keeping up with the Kardashians, BBC Sports Personality of the Year and New Girl.

Similarly to Ed, John began his trip by visiting grassroots music venue The Tin Music and Arts where he got involved in a creative music session with SoundLab-Cov – a successful Coventry Music programme.

The multi-instrumentalist then visited his old school and Coventry AP Academy where he supported the young musicians in developing their skills, shared insights into the music industry and encouraged young people to explore creative careers.

Coun Dr Kindy Sandhu, Coventry City Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “It’s fantastic that John chose to come to home to see the brilliant music education work that goes on. As one of our former students, he’s a great role model for those students who want to follow in similar footsteps.

“Music is a great way for self-expression and development of young people socially and John really inspired our young people to follow their creative careers during his visit.”

John went on to rejoin the 2025 James Blunt tour.
