Super Bowl weekend is putting the hurt on box office newcomers Love Hurts and Heart Eyes in theaters.
Last weekend’s No. 1 film, Dog Man, is also feeling the pain. According to Deadline, Dog Man—an animated family comedy starring the voices of Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher and Ricky Gervais—is seeing a 61% drop in business at the domestic box office after earning $36 million in its first Friday to Sunday frame.

The trade publication is projecting Dog Man will earn $13.7 million through Sunday, which will boost the DreamWorks/Universal Pictures release’s overall domestic take to $54.1 million. Despite the huge drop in business, Dog Man, which is playing in 3,857 North American theaters, is projected to hold onto the No. 1 spot.
Sony Pictures Entertainment projects that the Valentine’s Day-themed horror thriller Heart Eyes—which is a product of Sony subsidiary Screen Gems—will earn anywhere from $8.5 million to $10 million in its opening weekend from 3,102 theaters.
Meanwhile, Deadline projects that the action-comedy Love Hurts—starring Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose—will take in $6 million from 3,055 North American theaters.

Among the slate of recent releases staking their claims in the domestic box office top five is one outlier—Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King—which has been a mainstay in theaters since its Dec. 20 opening.
Per Deadline, Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to earn $4.2 million from 2,945 theaters to boost its domestic tally to $235 million in its first eight weeks. The Disney animated and live-action hybrid announced last week that the film is coming to digital streaming later this month.
