Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie has me asking one big question

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is coming early next year, and the full title was revealed today. Nintendo teased a Nintendo Direct announcement earlier this week. Those usually have some big revelations in them, but no one was thinking we’d get information about the follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie on a random Friday. All of this is super exciting, but I have one big question: Does this mean we’re getting a new Super Mario Galaxy game for the Nintendo Switch 2?

If you somehow missed it, The Super Mario Bros. Movie absolutely crushed at the box office. With over a billion dollar box office haul, there was no doubt that a sequel would be on the way in short order. After all, that’s been standard operating procedure in Hollywood for a while now. While debates about what the name of the second movie in this burgeoning franchise swirled, a lot of folks locked in on “Super Mario World” as a natural progression for the series. (Some well-placed “leaks” certainly didn’t hurt there either!)

While I was looking forward to seeing that rendition of a massively popular entry in the Mario games franchise translated to the screen. Seriously, Super Mario World is one of those constantly touted titles on the Internet, even after all these decades. Nintendo and Illumination flipping the script here does make a little bit of sense. Especially, when we circle back to the point I just made about how long ago the Super Mario World game released.

Why Super Mario Galaxy?

At first glance, this might seem like a strange choice. After all, The Super Mario Bros. Movie did a great job of introducing casual audiences to Mario, Luigi, Peach and Donkey Kong. Why go from just the Mushroom Kingdom all the way out into the Stars? Well, The answer probably lies in how long the series has been running, and what modern iterations of Mario Bros. look like.

In a lot of millennial minds, the first thing that pops up when you think about “Modern Mario” is probably something like Super Mario 64 or something. That Nintendo 64 title was the Italian plumber’s big jump to 3D after all. But, my friends, Super Mario 64 came out in 1996, and Super Mario World is even older than that! This is a character that’s going to be celebrating a 40-year anniversary next year. So, a more modern take is probably necessary.

One of my favorite memes of the last half-decade focuses on this idea of time passing quicker than any of us would want to admit. A retro Mario game for Gen Z or Gen Alpha would actually be Super Mario Galaxy from the Nintendo Wii era, 2007 to be exact. That’s distressing for those of us who clearly remember walking into a Circuit City to buy one at the tail end of the Aughts. But, it’s warm comforting nostalgia for the age cohort who helped Inside Out 2 crush the box office last year. (I’d argue that the Pixar film is the first in a wave of rising Gen Z nostalgia projects that continues with this year’s Zootopia 2…)

Will there be a new Galaxy game for Switch 2?

Super Mario Galaxy 2

All of that is great, but it isn’t the question I had immediately after seeing that short clip. My first thought was, “Is this why the Super Mario Odyssey sequel hasn’t been announced yet???” Think about it, Donkey Kong Bananza shares the same development team as the Nintendo Switch launch title. But, they have to be working on a new 3D Mario. Also, The Super Mario Bros. Movie actually ended up tipping the company’s hand when it came to Donkey Kong, as the character’s new design debuted in that film.

It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for the next 3D Mario game to revisit Galaxy. The original Wii title and its sequel are considered classics by gaming communities all over. Over on Metacritic, the first Super Mario Galaxy game stands at a 9.1, aka. “Universal Acclaim,” so that all makes a bit of sense. When you add in how much bigger the Mario brand is than it was back in 2007 and there are some tea leaves taking shape in this particular cup-shaped galaxy. But, we won’t know more until another Nintendo Direct blasts off later this year.
