‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Sequel Gets Cosmic New Title With First Teaser

The next installment in The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise has been revealed, and fans will instantly recognize the iconic video game title getting the animated film treatment. After leaking online earlier this week, it’s been confirmed that the new sequel will have Mario on a galaxy-bound adventure alongside a very familiar star.

Illumination has officially unleashed the first teaser trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is set to release in theaters on April 3, 2026. Along with the cosmic footage and title, the studio confirmed that the cast will once again feature Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Meanwhile, unclear who might voice Yoshi, who was teased in the post-credits scene of the 2023 film. You can check out the teaser below.

The upcoming film will be based on Super Mario Galaxy, widely regarded as one of the best 3D Mario games. As teased in the trailer, the story follows Mario teaming up with Luma, a star-shaped character, on a universal adventure to save Princess Peach from Bowser. The 2007 video game also features other key characters from the canon, including Rosalina and Bowser Jr. Interestingly enough, Yoshi was not a part of the first game’s storyline, but does appear to assist Mario in the direct follow-up, Super Mario Galaxy 2. There is a chance that the film adaptation takes cues from both installments, especially since the first movie borrowed from several iconic titles.

A ‘Donkey Kong’ Movie Is Also in the Works

As The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially revealed, another animated film set in the video game universe is reportedly in the works. Over the summer, a copyright filing revealed that Nintendo and Universal Pictures had recently registered the following: “Untitled Donkey Kong Project; Motion picture.” While the studio has yet to confirm the news, a Donkey Kong solo movie has been rumored ever since the smash success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. In fact, the latest news surrounding The Super Mario Galaxy Movie seemingly support the idea that a spinoff film featuring Kong is in development.

Although the main cast of the first film is set to return in Super Mario Galaxy, the most prominent omission from today’s announcement is Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Despite having a key role in the 2023 movie, it seems he won’t be appearing in the highly anticipated sequel. This supports speculation that a spinoff film will feature Rogen back as the beloved character in a solo adventure (potentially alongside Diddy Kong). Of course, until Universal or Nintendo confirms the rumor, it will stay as such. But the writing is on the wall, especially since Nintendo has been doubling down on video game adaptations.
